Early Life and Background

Raised in Southwest Michigan, Ben grew up in Edwardsburg and graduated from Edwardsburg High School. He went on to earn his Bachelor of Science from Western Michigan University before bringing his passion for teaching and athletics to Central Florida.

Over Two Decades of Impact in Lake County

Ben began his 22-year career in Lake County public schools alongside long-time colleagues at Carver Middle School during the district’s “Launch into Lake” orientation. He eventually joined the staff at Umatilla High School, where he became an essential member of the Bulldog family.

Leading the AICE Program

As the coordinator for the Advanced International Certificate of Education (AICE) program, Ben helped students unlock academic potential they didn’t know they possessed, guiding many toward earning college credits and Bright Futures Scholarships:

“Positivity in the program is off the charts. There is nothing better than the reaction of students after they realize they have earned the Bright Futures Scholarship… or after they realize they have earned a college credit by passing a test they never thought they could. The smiles are amazing and worth every single second spent on these students.”

Tributes from Colleagues and Students

News of Ben’s passing brought an outpouring of grief and appreciation from fellow educators, administrators, and former students whose lives he touched:

Umatilla High School Statement

“Mr. Nash was an essential part of the Bulldog family. Throughout his 22 years in Lake County, he helped change the lives of thousands as a teacher, coach, mentor, and friend. His impact on our school and our students will not be forgotten. Our thoughts and sincerest condolences are with his wife Melissa and his family during this time.”

Brent Frazier, Principal of Umatilla High School

“I don’t post often about my feelings, but my heart is broken today. Twenty-two years ago almost to the day, I met Ben Nash at Launch into Lake… Since that day he has been my best friend, brother, and my biggest cheerleader. I love you my friend! You will be missed more than words can express.”

Gracelyn Roach, Alumna

“In truth, I wouldn’t have done as well on my tests if it weren’t for Ben Nash and all my teachers. All my AICE teachers went the extra mile to answer questions, especially Mr. Nash, to create study guides and prepare us for the stress of almost a month of tests. As a group, we would never have succeeded without Mr. Nash.”

Family and Legacy

Ben is survived by his loving wife, Melissa Inmon-Nash, as well as extended family, colleagues, and a broad community of former students and athletes across Lake County and Edwardsburg.

Details regarding memorial services and community celebrations of his life will be shared by the family and Umatilla High School in the coming days.
